DevCon 2011 Roundup

posted Aug 15, 2011, 5:15 PM by Eric Matthews   [ updated Aug 16, 2011, 11:26 AM ]

The FileMaker Developer Conference was the most concentrated professional development event I've attended in years and was a great opportunity to learn and to bring information back to our campus.

In the higher education in-house developer discussion session I facilitated, there were FileMaker developers from De Anza College, UCSF, UC Irvine, Cornell, MIT, UT Austin, Texas A&M, Baylor, Duquesne, Drexel, Nebraska, Washington, Australia, and more.

Below is a FileMaker database link to all the sessions that were available:
(Due to current Google App bugs, you might have to copy and paste this URL directly into your browser's address field.)
You can click on each session in the list for a more detailed description. Every session I marked "Favorite" is a session I can tell you about from my notes, and most of the other sessions I can tell you about from the notes and sample files they gave me at the conference. Although recordings of the sessions were not allowed, a couple of the speakers recreated their sessions and posted those recordings online. So, if you have any questions about any of the session topics, please let me know, and I'll share what I can.

Also, Thu, August 25, 2011, 7:00 PM
in Santa Clara, there will be a DIGFM user group meeting where other local attendees also will be sharing (over pizza) what they learned at the conference. See the links below for more information and to RSVP:

iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod) Development: The 13th Module

posted May 27, 2011, 6:02 PM by Eric Matthews   [ updated May 27, 2011, 7:08 PM ]

While we were busy with training this semester, I learned that some departments have been recently blessed with new iPads on top of those who already have the iPhone or iPod Touch. Well, one of the best kept secrets is that if you know how to develop a FileMaker solution, like those 19 trainees who completed spring training, you already know how to develop applications for all those iOS devices with the hardware and software you already have. To use all those databases and applications, all you need on your iOS device is FileMaker Go, and you'll have as many apps as you can shake a FileMaker Pro client at.

Those who got their training materials this spring have a Module 13, which covers specific uses of and development tips for FileMaker Go. Those who don't have
Module 13 can download it for free here
If, for some strange reason, several of you want Eric Matthews to lead a course based on this module, you'll have to start another small riot requesting this class from the Center for Faculty of Development (cfd@sjsu.edu), copying filemaker-group@sjsu.edu. It might take about half a dozen trainees and a few managers, deans, or chairs to get this class scheduled.

FileMaker Training Series, Spring 2011

posted Mar 3, 2011, 1:21 PM by Eric Matthews   [ updated Mar 15, 2011, 2:30 PM ]

San José State University is a FileMaker Authorized Trainer of the complete
FileMaker Training Series (FTS) for campus faculty, staff, and students. (You won't see us on the public list of trainers because we don't offer our training outside of the campus community. Outside, complete FTS training costs from $1,500 to $2,000 per trainee.)

The FileMaker Training Series is the official training curriculum from FileMaker, Inc. It offers a series of 12 training modules that cover a comprehensive set of topics designed to help you master the essentials of FileMaker solution development. The FileMaker Training Series is targeted at intermediate to advanced FileMaker developers, but anyone who wants to create databases can increase their knowledge from these time-tested materials. This series is also a key resource for becoming a
FileMaker Certified Developer.

The FTS modules are as follows:

  1. Using FileMaker Pro
  2. Working with Fields
  3. Data Modeling
  4. Working with Layouts
  5. Calculation Functions
  6. Scripts
  7. Reporting
  8. Security
  9. Intermediate & Advanced Techniques
  10. FileMaker Server
  11. Connectivity
  12. Web Publishing

With generous support from the Division of Student Affairs and the Center for Faculty Development (CFD), Eric Matthews, Systems Analyst, certified developer, and authorized trainer, will be training on each of these twelve modules on the following Tuesdays and  Thursdays, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, beginning March 15 with Using FileMaker Pro:

  • March 15, 17, 29
  • April 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 28
  • May 3, 5, 10, 17

Staff and faculty may attend all twelve modules (for a "Certificate of Completion") or if they already have experience with any version of FileMaker Pro, they can attend any of the sessions separately.

Requirements

Attendance requires each trainee to bring a copy of the FileMaker Training Series book and DVD, which employees or departments can purchase online for $99

From the Center for Faculty Development:

Please remember that a text will be needed to take the course.  The discounted cost will be about $65.  When you RSVP to let CFD know that you will be taking the course, please also let them know if your department will be providing the funding for the text or if you will individually be paying for the text.  If your department is providing the funding, they will be given an account to transfer the funding.  If you will be paying for the text, we will make arrangements with the Bursar's Office so that you may pay for the text there.

Contact CFD for further information.

Attendance also requires registration through Center for Faculty Development: cfd@sjsu.edu or call 4-2303.

Suggested Prerequisites

"Introduction to FileMaker", a FileMaker Pro Interactive Tutorial

or equivalent experience using or making FileMaker Pro databases or other database (Access, Oracle, MySQL, etc.),

or proficiency in creating spreadsheets (e.g. calculations, etc.).

Additional Recommendations

Each trainee should have an active SJSUOne account: http://www.sjsu.edu/helpdesk/tutorials/sjsuone

Course: Introduction to FileMaker Pro

posted Mar 3, 2011, 10:45 AM by Eric Matthews   [ updated Mar 3, 2011, 1:20 PM ]

An Introduction to FileMaker Pro is being offered in collaboration between the Division of Student Affairs and Center for Faculty development (CFD). Eric Matthews, systems analyst, certified FileMaker developer, and authorized FileMaker trainer for Student Affairs, will facilitate the sessions in IRC 210.

On Tuesday, March 8 from 9:30 to 11:30, the session will introduce the use of FileMaker Pro databases: browsing, finding, and sorting records; navigating layouts and views; entering, importing, printing and exporting data; how to start your own database; a quick overview of customizations that can facilitate a user's work; and resources for learning more about FileMaker Pro.

On Thursday, March 10 from 9:30 to 11:30, the session will introduce how to develop a database application: ways to create tables, fields, and relationships (joins); simplifying data entry; automating tasks with buttons and scripts; creating reports and charts; and sharing and protecting databases on a network.

This course may fill as quickly as it did the last last two time we offered it;

so please RSVP with the CFD at cfd@sjsu.edu or call 924-2303.

Please do not attend this course if you already intend to take the upcoming twelve-module FileMaker Training Series.

This four-hour introduction course (in 2 two-hour sessions), covers the FileMaker Pro 11 Tutorial and other resources to show you how you can manage your information in FileMaker Pro databases. To attend you should register through Center for Faculty Developmenthttp://www.sjsu.edu/cfd/events

More FileMaker Training Courses at SJSU

posted Feb 1, 2011, 10:16 AM by Eric Matthews   [ updated Feb 9, 2011, 6:00 PM ]

Anyone or any department interested in more FileMaker training at SJSU should submit interest to the Center for Faculty Development, (cfd@sjsu.edu or 924-2303), and copy the FileMaker Group at SJSU (filemaker-group@sjsu.edu). Before we can schedule a course, we need a proposed schedule and the names of at least five staff or faculty who would commit to attend the course. Once the course is scheduled, we would want to try to fill a classroom with at least ten trainees.

Courses can be one or two day focused topics (e.g. Introduction to FileMaker Pro) or the complete twelve-module FileMaker Training Series (FTS) for data application development. We've had full classrooms of both types of courses. See past announcements for examples of courses previously delivered at SJSU.
